Determining fit-for-purpose of post-consumer-recycled (PCR) plastic as food contact material

The 2025 national packaging target aims to achieve 30% average recycled content across all packaging. Australian Standard AS 2070-1999 currently prohibits use of post-consumer recycled material for use in direct contact with food. An important consideration in using recycled packaging for foods is the aromas present in recycled materials may permeate into the food. This project will develop approaches using multidimensional-GC-MS-Olfactometry to measure off-flavour compounds in recycled packaging material.
